Abstract: |
The City of Hereford Archaeology Unit was appointed by the Lyonshall Parochial Church Council in December 1992 to carry out archaeological investigations associated with proposed new drainage works. Trenches were inspected and recorded on various dates between May and November 1993, following excavation by the contractor. There was a complete absence of human bone in the trenches to the north of the church. There was some evidence for an earlier drainage system around the northern part of the church consisting of a rubble-filled trench; this would, in effect, have operated as a continuous soakaway but must have fallen into disuse well before a tarmac path was laid. Two stone-filled trenches to the south of the church had no apparent function and were completely undated; they did not appear to be foundation trenches and were rather too close to the church to represent an earlier churchyard boundary.[AIP] |
