Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken following proposals to build a number of new buildings within the curtilage of Swallowfield Park. The study suggested that the proposed New Classical Wing and Pavilion buildings both ran the risk of affecting significant deposits dating from the prehistoric through to the later post-medieval period. The presence (or absence) of such deposits was, however, uncertain and the precise archaeological impact of the proposed developments was therefore undefined. It was therefore likely that a programme of further evaluation would need to be carried out to better define the impact of the proposed developments. The study had identified one known (or likely) site within the footprint of the proposed New Classical Wing. This was the site of an ornamental pond certainly associated with the 18th and early 19th century house and gardens, which potentially represented the extant remains of a medieval fishpond and a fishpond/lake associated with later (16th and 17th) century phases of the house and garden. It was likely that this feature would be significantly affected by the construction of the new building. It was suggested that this impact could be substantially mitigated by a programme of archaeological evaluation and excavation intended to establish the extent and nature of the feature and to sample and record the deposits present prior to their loss.
