Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a retail park. Earlier desk-based assessment had identified that two major buildings had once lain on the site, comprising a House of Correction or Prison, first documented in the 17th century, and a silk mill, built in c. 1750 and demolished in the 1960s. Former crofts had also once run down to an earlier channel of the River Hipper, at the western end of the site. However, no major excavations were undertaken in this area during the development, and thus no observations coud be made. Elsewhere within the site, an extensive area of brick rubble was observed, within which could be seen some lengths of upstanding wall relating to the former silk mill building. Observation during the cutting of a service trench across the site of the former prison revealed brick rubble and remnants of the walls of early 20th century houses; no traces of the prison building were seen.
