Abstract:
A desk-based review revealed that cropmarks and earthwork features needed further inspection. Excavations and aerial photographs showed clear evidence for occupation on the north side of Watling Street. There was very little early medieval archaeology within the site. Arial photographs showed that most of the site was covered by medieval ridge and furrow, now largely destroyed by deep-ploughing, which implied that the land was used primarily for agriculture and was not densely occupied. The potential for post-medieval remains was much higher as several sites had been identified from historic maps and site surveys, including the remains of Potash Farm, a possible brick earth pit and the former brick yard at Two Mile Ash Farm. There was a number of surviving hedged field boundaries that may have contained environmental information within deposits at the bottom. The areas that lay alongside Watling Street had a high potential for discovery of archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]
