Abstract: |
An archaeological watching and recording brief was undertaken taken during the insertion of a French drain to alleviate damp in the church. The trench ran from the western wall of the south porch, around the western ends of the south and north aisles and the tower, a total distance of 44m. The present church appeared to be entirely Perpendicular in style, dating from the 15th century, although it was believed to have resulted from the remodelling of an earlier cruciform structure. Remnants of the earlier structures were still to be found in the massive Norman pier of the chancel arch. No archaeological deposits were encountered or compromised during this work. The only features of an archaeological nature exposed were the lower wall and foundations of the aisles and tower. The investigations did not reveal any evidence for an earlier church on a different alignment to the present one. [Au(abr)] |
