Abstract: |
A buildings survey was undertaken of the Red Lion Hotel at Haltwhistle. The building had been closed for some years at the time of the survey and was in poor structural condition. An historical description was made, and studies of both the exterior and interior were undertaken. A tower incorporated in the building was considered unlikely to be the 'Tower of Haltwhistle' referred to in 1415, but was immediately post-medieval in date if not actually medieval. The presence of a defensible building in an urban context was noted as a rarity, and the building as a whole was deemed to be the second most important building in Haltwhistle after the parish church.
