Abstract:
The watching brief allowed the projected line of part of the defences along the northern side of the medieval town to be postulated. The presence of a silt layer in the base of the ditch, dated by pottery to the 11th or 12th centuries, indicated that the town defences ceased to be effectively maintained from a relatively early date. Pottery from the upper ditch fills, and from pits that cut the upper fills around the northern edge of the ditch, showed that the ditch had been completely infilled by the beginning of the 16th century. This corroborated Leland's account of the demolition of the defences prior to 1542. The recent observations also indicated that pits were being dug into the rear of the rampart from c.1250 onwards. A buried soil predating the construction of the rampart indicated that the site had been under cultivation before the late Saxon burh was established. [Au(adp)]
