Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of three residential buildings. The report concluded that although the site lay adjacent to an area of archaeological significance (AAS 21), this designation was an approximate reflection of past human activity in the area. There was good evidence for pottery production in the Roman period but, as yet, little in the way of associated settlement evidence. In contrast, in the medieval period there was good settlement evidence but only circumstantial data to suggest the manufacture of pottery in the area. However, the fact that there were suitable clay deposits present in Elstree pointed strongly to the probability that ceramic production also occurred in the medieval period. Based on the present evidence it seemed that the chances of locating pre-modern settlement and/or industrial activity on this site were relatively high. [Au(adp)] |
