Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken due to proposed redevelopment of the site. The site lay in the area of Lambeth Marsh, historically wet and marshy and so remained relatively undeveloped until the later post-medieval period. Archaeological excavations around the site indicated that the southern half of the site was situated in the higher ground, where significant Mesolithic and Neolithic remains had been recorded. The northern half of the site was significantly lower and it was unlikely that similar remains existed here. Early maps indicated that the site was first developed in the late 18th century as small mixed commercial and domestic properties, being fully developed by the mid 19th century. Previous building on the site had removed most of these properties, except for the Hospital on York Street now a Grade II listed building and had truncated the top of alluvial drift deposits. However, the prehistoric occupation levels and palaeo-environmental deposits did not appear to have been significantly damaged. It would seem likely that any impact below existing made ground or basement levels could impact prehistoric or later deposits. [Au(abr)]
