Abstract: |
Two trenches were archaeologically excavated prior to the construction of two new sheltered bungalows. The excavation revealed part of the southern side of the town enclosure ditch known as the Repell Ditch or magnum fossatum, believed to have been set out in the early 13th century. The north side and centre of the ditch were excavated in trench 1, but the south side of the ditch was located beyond the edge of the development area. The ditch had been completely infilled by the 18th century, when a wall of this date was constructed across it. Trench 2 was located in the area most likely to have been occupied by an accompanying bank or rampart. No evidence for this was found. The presence of two post-medieval pits and a series of five 18th century or later cultivation trenches suggested that any bank had been removed by this date. [Au(abr)] |
