Abstract:
Excavations and watching briefs were undertaken as a result of planning requirements related to a restaurant extension and landscaping. The work was the first opportunity to investigate archaeological deposits in this part of Hereford outside the castle. The work revealed two road surfaces, probably associated with the road to the castle. In addition it identified a well-stratified sequence of deposits from before the conquest, spanning into the medieval period. These included evidence for buildings, rubbish pits and other features containing pottery of medieval date. The most significant find was that of a burnt Saxon building. Within the blackened deposits were a line of loom weights, which had presumably fallen straight from the loom during the fire. Post-medieval stratigraphy was absent in most of the trenches, with later truncation probably removing deposits of this date. However, some evidence for post-medieval activity was present, including two wells. [Au(abr)]
