Abstract: |
A desktop study of land ahead of proposed redevelopment determined that the land lay in a zone of high archaeological potential. The surrounding area was rich in sites from the prehistoric, Roman and Saxon periods. Within the study area burials and pits were known from work undertaken in 1903, this suggested the existence of Late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in the north-eastern corner of the study area. The impact of the construction and extension of the sewage works was thought to have been limited, however quarrying for gravel would have totally destroyed any archaeology in that particular area.
