Abstract:
The assessment comprised a documentary review, a walkover survey and a geophysical survey. Areas 1 and 2 were situated on the same steep west-facing spur overlooking the River Axe. The principal area of archaeological potential for the site was considered to be its position within an important later prehistoric landscape. Recent excavations on the adjacent spur immediately to the south had revealed a large ditched enclosure and associated settlement of Bronze Age date. The geophysical survey identified the presence of two ring ditches, one being likely to represent the remains of a ploughed out barrow, the second possibly representing another settlement enclosure due to its size. The walkover survey produced no surface evidence for the presence of archaeological evidence, but it was clear from the historical study, that a large portion of the site was under arable production preceding and at the time of the 1840 tithe map, which was likely to have levelled any upstanding earthworks. It was considered that there was a high likelihood for the presence of important archaeological remains on the site. [Au(adp)]
