Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development of the railway, the route passed through the Anglo-Saxon and medieval town of Nottingham and largely followed the medieval street. The Robin Hood Line was originally the Midland Countries Railway laid out in the mid-19th century, with a spur leading to the Babbington colliery. Part of the route contained the civil war northern defences of the town. The viaducts were part of the Great Central railway, 1900. Significant numbers of caves were recorded under, or close to, the route. Therefore, archaeological remains could be encountered at any point, especially where the route crossed the medieval town wall, Markey Wall (the ancient boundary), Victoria Street (where it crossed the Anglo-Saxon burh defence), Middle Hill (medieval) and Leen riverside where waterlogged environmental deposits or riverside structures might be encountered. It was possible that buried archaeological deposits might be affected by the proposals. [Au(abr)] |
