Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that an Early Neolithic causewayed camp lay c. 1km to the north, and that a waterside settlement at Runnymede Bridge, a SAM, dated from the Middle Neolithic. Stray finds recorded in the area included a Mesolithic axe, other flint artefacts, and pottery and a harness mount of Iron Age date. Bronze Age structural remains, evidence of extensive Romano-British agricultural activity, and an early medieval enclosure ditch had also been recorded in the vicinity. Egham Causeway, a 13th century raised road, ran along the route of the northern boundary of the proposal site. Post-medieval occupation sites had been located to the west. It was concluded that the main archaeological potential of the site was for prehistoric activity, but that stray finds dating from the prehistoric to the post-medieval period could have survived within alluvial deposits, which were known to lie beneath made ground.
