Abstract: |
Archaelogical survey, monitring and excavation was undertaken during the construction of a water pipeline from the hillside above Newbiggin to near Aysgarth. Thirteen sites of archaeological significance were identified as a result of preconstruction desktop assessment of the corridor route and also during the construction phase of the pipeline. Principal amongst these was a site on the street frontage at Newbiggin where a limekiln indicated evidence of small-scale industrial activity, of probable post-medieval date. A detailed survey was undertaken of part of the co-axial field system, house platform, and earthworks to the west of Thoralby and a drawn record was obtained of the boundaries bisected by the corridor was also obtained. |
