Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site and its immediate vicinity in order to fulfil a condition upon planning permission. There was no historical reference to the site prior to the post-medieval period. The earliest cartographic representation of the site was a map surveyed in 1762, which revealed a manor to the north of the site, while the earliest aerial photographs dated from 1948. Four of the buildings across the site were listed. These included an 18th century farmhouse and granary, an octagonal dovecote and a 17th century barn. There was no direct evidence for the presence of archaeological deposits across the site, however a late Bronze Age spearhead, Mesolithic/Neolithic stone work, Roman urns and medieval tiles had been found in the vicinity. A number of cropmarks also indicated the presence of possible Iron Age ditches and possible Iron and Bronze Age enclosures in the vicinity. The report concluded that the site had areas of both possible and restricted potential. [Au(Adp)] |
