Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of 29 test pits, was carried out. Natural sand and gravel was revealed at the base of each test pit. In most test pits, peat was encountered up to 1.3m thick, rising up from east to west between -1.86 and -2.43m OD. Many of the test pits contained ancient tree trunks, some with root boles intact, and branches. There was no evidence of worked timbers, wooden structures, or archaeological artefacts. A river or palaeo-channel, possibly orientated north-south, may have run across the western limit of the evaluation area, this was represented by a shallow blue alluvium filled shallow natural channel that truncated the peat in Test Pit 9, and blue alluvium and redeposited peat in Test Pit 29. Alluvium deposits up to 2.6m thick overlay the peat and palaeo-channel in all test pits, rising up from 0.22m OD in the east to 1.56m OD in the west. Modern made-ground to a depth of 2.5m was encountered across the site and a modern intrusion to a depth of over 4.5m in test pit 34. No finds were recovered from any of the deposits during the evaluation. [Au(abr)] |
