Abstract:
A programme of archaeological recording was undertaken during the excavation of five post holes within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Symonds Yat Promontory Fort (Glos SMR 19, SAM 28861), one of only four recognised Iron Age hillfort sites in Gloucestershire west of the River Severn. The watching brief was a condition of Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered during the watching brief. This did not, however, mitigate against the likely survival of significant archaeological features within the hillfort within the hillfort interior. The fragment of tap-slag recovered from the spoil of post hole 2 may have indicated that bloomery smelting took place on the site. The date of this smelting could not be determined on the basis of this find. Small quantities of bloomery slag had previously been reported from a tree throw hollow within the fort interior and dated to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman Transitional period. This combination of finds may have tentatively suggested that Late Iron Age/early Roman smelting took place at this site, although this evidence was far from conclusive. [Au(adp)]
