Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay within a Conservation Area and was designated an Area of Special Landscape Value. Peat deposits had been recorded at the site and a medieval mill, presumably a corn mill, had almost certainly existed there. Paper milling had occurred at the site from 1658 until 1889, when the plant was taken over by a wool company. A bridge which was considered to be of 13th century date and which was a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Surrey no. 33) and a Grade I Listed Building lay close to the proposal site. Archaeological remains recorded in the surrounding area included Mesolithic flints, interments of a possible Romano-British date, earthworks relating to a Saxon burh, an 18th century dovecote and a post-medieval ice house. It was concluded that the site had high archaeological potential relating to the peat deposits and to the early and later post-medieval mill structures, and a lower potential for remains of the medieval mill and other medieval and earlier features.
