Abstract: |
A series of six trial trenches were excavated to evaluate the archaeological potential potential of a small paddock proposed for redevelopment within the site of the Outer Ward of Wark Castle. The evaluation identified deeply stratified archaeological deposits in two trenches sited on level ground towards the centre of the field and it appeared that the area of level ground had the highest archaeological potential. The earliest deposits encountered consisted of make-up or midden material of medieval date sealed beneath a number of discrete cobble surfaces probably of late medieval and early post-medieval date. Rectilinear gaps between the cobble surfaces were interpreted as demarking the line of timber framed structures. [Au] |
