Abstract: |
Evaluation trenching in early 1997 produced evidence of Late Saxon and Saxo-Norman occupation in two of eight trenches. The remains included postholes, beamslots and pits which probably represented property boundaries and a timber structure. All archaological features were located on terrace gravels. In contrast, the remaining six trenches, which produced alluvial deposits, lay within the extent of 1947 flood waters which suggested that the edge of the recent inundation may also have limited the historic edge of permanently dry land. The new evidence suggested that a consideration should be made towards a Late Saxon/Saxo-Norman component when discussing the origins and the early history of Swavesey. [Au] |
