Abstract:
A survey of the needle industry in the Arrow Valley was commissioned from Dr Paul Collins by Warwickshire Museum and funded by English Heritage. The project involved both documentary research and fieldwork; a brief history of needle manufacture was compiled and individual needlemaking sites in the valley were described, sketched and photographed. Sites included in the survey were: Ipsley Mills, Ipsley, Redditch (SP062663); Washford Mill, Washford, north of Studley (SP07106501); The Griffin Inn, Green Lane, north of Studley [SP066646]; Priory Mill, Studley (SP07656400); Morton Mill, Morton Bagot (SP10416463); King's Coughton Mill, King's Coughton (SP086593); Ragley Mill, Alcester (SP08645797); and Oversley Mill, Oversley, south of Alcester (SP086567). The fieldwork survey concentrated upon the recording of any surviving landscape features, constructional materials and associated engineering at each site. Limited documentary research was undertaken to establish the chronological sequence and an outline working history of the mills in the valley. A primary aim of the survey was to provide a context for informed decision-making and advice concerning future protection. Another central concern was to gather information for an analysis of the articulation between different components of mill complexes. [AIP]
