Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during repair works to Tamworth Castle Coach House. Several construction phases and alterations were observed in the west elevation, and it was noted that the south wall had been entirely rebuilt. Backfilled post holes indicated former partitions in the interior, whilst a blocked aperture and a blocked doorway in the north wall suggested that the coach house may have been truncated. A stone kerb observed within a courtyard to the south was made of two re-used architectural details, which may have originated from an Elizabethan or Jacobean context. Two clay pipe fragments, three pieces of 19th century glass and five 19th century pottery sherds were recovered. [AIP] |
