Abstract: |
A desk-based study of land to the south of the City Centre, bounded to the west by Wilford Street, to the north by Canal Street and east by 46 Canal Street and the canal basin, and the south by the Nottingham Canal was undertaken. The site was open ground during the 17th and 18th century containing a few scattered buildings of unknown function, a bowling green and a mill race of possible natural origin. A mill, two bridges and the wharfs of Grey Friars lay adjacent to, but beyond, the north side of the development site. In 1792 the Nottingham Canal past by the southern edge of the development site. Increasing infilling by buildings continued through the 19th century, with the mill race being widened into "Fothergill's Basin", and a second basin added. Around the turn of the century, much rebuilding took place and the basins were backfilled and built over. [Au(abr)] |
