Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks in the basements of buildings at 5 Threadneedle Street. The groundworks were part of a refurbishment scheme on the buildings changing the usage from a bank and office building to a hotel and leisure facility. A series of drainage trenches, associated access shaft excavations and a connection heading into the mains sewer beneath Threadneedle Street were observed. No archaeological deposits pre-dating the earliest construction phase of the standing building (c1860) were observed in these excavations. Natural brickearth, sand and gravels deposits were observed in the deeper excavations. Two lift shaft excavations were also recorded. The lift shaft at the northern end of the building, although slightly widened, mainly re-used an existing lift shaft, beneath which an early 19th century brick lined well was observed. The lift shaft at the southern end of the building was excavated through ground make up deposits of 19th century date and the natural brickearth deposit. No earlier archaeological deposits were observed in these excavations. The watching brief also monitored the reduction of an area of made ground formerly in use as a lightwell. This area was reduced to the level of the existing basements at the southern end of the building. Once again the excavated deposits were of 19th or 20th century date and no earlier archaeological deposits were recorded. [Au(abr)]
