Abstract:
Two plots of land at Cavenham Quarry were subject to an archaeological evaluation comprising desk-based assessment and trial trenching. One plot had received planning consent, the other awaited a decision. The evaluation demonstrated that a site of Neolithic date existed in one of the plots of land (C2 North). The surviving archaeology consisted of a series of cut features which produced flintwork and pottery. The features appeared to be focussed in three areas and defined by a ditch, the density and nature of the features showed that occupation was more than a transient presence and suggested a domestic settlement of the Late Neolithic. A Mesolithic presence was also suggested by finds. Earthwork banks at the southern end of the site were thought to relate to one of the sites periods of use by the military. They were thought to be either Second World War anti-glider ditches associated with the nearby Tuddenham airfield, banks associated with a cavalry camp of 1779, or associated somehow with the English Civil War.
