Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site proposed for mineral extraction, where a 'brickwork' pattern field system had previously been identified from aerial photographs. The locations of features encountered within the trial trenches corresponded well with those predicted. Excavation of a number of sections across the ditches confirmed their original interpretation. The absence of some of the expected features was likely to have been due to their destruction by plough erosion in the period since the aerial photographs had been taken. No dating evidence was recovered, although analogy with similar previously published sites indicated an Iron Age or Roman date. No evidence of settlement activity was encountered. A single human cremation, recovered from an elongated pit, was probably of early prehistoric date, possibly Bronze Age, and was unlikely to have been associated with the field system. [Au(abr)] |
