Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that evidence of prehistoric activity in the area was not extensive, but that the site lay on the route of a Roman road, on the outskirts of a Roman settlement. Extra-mural cemeteries and small-scale rural settlements had been recorded on major Roman routes elsewhere, and it was possible that such remains, and evidence relating to construction of the road itself, could lie within the proposal site. The town of Huntingdon was not thought to have extended as far as the site during Saxon and medieval times. The site of a moat and homestead, which lay to the north, suggested an essentially rural landscape in the medieval period. Some disturbance from services supplying existing buildings at the site was anticipated. [AIP] |
