Abstract: |
The assessment produced evidence to suggest that the study area was of some archaeological interest. The remaining undisturbed field clearly incorporated the southern portion of the former village green and a lane leading to Leventhorpe. It was known that during the 17th century features such as a stocks, a pin fold and temporary huts were located on the green itself. The green was known to have still had buildings on its southern side in the early 18th century and these probably had medieval precursors. The earlier course of the Leventhorpe Lane depicted on 19th century maps also ran across the study area. The development could have thus disturbed remains of the former village and it was suggested that geophysical survey, followed by limited archaeological excavation would be an appropriate pre-planning response.
