Abstract: |
Two parallel linear gullies of medieval date were best interpreted as possible horticultural features. The relatively low quantities of residual pottery on the site reflected that of an area that was not generally used for rubbish disposal on any large scale. After 1500, but before 1720, a modest number of pits seemed to have been dug in the south-west part of the excavated area, including one large pit interpreted as a soakaway. By 1720, this activity seemed to have ceased and the site was laid out as the extensive formal urban garden shown on the plan of 1784. [Au(abr)] |
