Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was prepared prior to the extension of the current science block. The study suggested that the archaeological potential of the site was high; it was situated within land that formed the grounds of the medieval manor house of Hallgarth, which was subsequently used as a market place during the major annual fairs. Additionally, the site was located close to the River Witham and may have preserved evidence of utilisation of the waterway in medieval and later times. Previous excavations in this area had produced a range of archaeological deposits attesting to activity in the Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval periods. This material included structural, industrial, funerary and organic remains. [Au(abr)] |
