Abstract: |
A new development on a site believed to have been on the line of a Roman road was preceded by a desk-based assessment and an evaluation. The evaluation did not convincingly locate the road, but did reveal a deposit of burnt flint that appeared to be a prehistoric burnt mound. A small excavation was planned to test the nature of this deposit and determine it's context. Although a Roman ditch crossed the site on the projected line of the road, there was no sign of the road itself, and the flint was determined to have been the remains of a burnt mound. Pottery, flint work and radiocarbon dating converged to confirm that the mound was created in the Middle Bronze Age. [Au(adp)] |
