Abstract: |
Observations made during drainage works showed that the fortifications of old Portsmouth lay under this area. On the west side of the car park two sections of massive stone walls over 2m and 2.8m wide were located. These were thought to be part of the forward facing wall of the Town Bastion (east side). It was noted in both cases that the back of the wall (west side) still retained its facing blocks, but the east sides facing on to the conjectured moat had been destroyed, with some rubble being spread from the face of the wall. A further series of five walls were found in Trench Five on the east side of the site, ditch like cuts were also observed. [Au(adp)] |
