Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken due to proposed development. Consultation of the GLSMR, archives of archaeological sites and other historical data indicated a low to moderate potential for archaeology. There was little density of finds indicative of a settlement of Saxon or earlier date in the site area. The most likely periods of archaeological significance were medieval and post-medieval due to the sites position close to the small settlement of Hatcham (now New Cross), shown on cartographic sources from the 18th century but probably existing from the medieval period. The site was not built up until the late 19th century and prior to this was associated with the Hatcham settlement and it was possible that boundaries may have survived. Although tenements or domestic activity did not extended to this area prior to the post-medieval period, evidence of early field systems or industrial activity may have been present. Some damage to the archaeological deposits had probably occurred during previous developments. Basemented areas were relatively shallow c.1.9m below ground level at the north of the site and deep cut archaeological features such as pits or ditches may have survived. However, the southern half of the site (with some exceptions) appeared to be the area with the highest potential for archaeological survival. [Au(abr)]
