Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the site of a proposed dwelling. The development site lay on or near the suspected site of a medieval grange, and just to the south-east of a now demolished 19th century farm complex. A previous watching brief immediately to the east had uncovered a number of walls, some of which could have been associated with field boundaries shown on early maps, whilst others were from later, probably post-medieval structures. One possible architectural fragment of uncertain but possibly medieval date was discovered built into one of the walls. In addition, some areas of slag residue were recorded that may have indicated industrial activity on or near the site during the late 17th or 18th century. The current watching brief uncovered only limited archaeological evidence for historic activity on the site. As with the previous 1998 work, no conclusive evidence was found for the site of the medieval Oakenshaw Grange. The earliest activity within the area of the watching brief was represented by two shallow, parallel cut features, which had been cut into the natural clay and were probably pre-19th century in date. The origin and function of the features was unclear but they may have been associated with 18th century or earlier industrial activity on or near to the site. These features were sealed by a layer of light-brown/yellow clay, possibly laid down as a result of deliberate landscaping activities. The clay was used as the base for a poorly constructed field wall of probable 19th century date. [Au(abr)]
