Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at the site of a housing development. A large quantity of Mesolithic flint artefacts had been found at a nearby site in the 19th century. The area appeared to have been common land in the medieval period, before expanding rapidly as a new town with the arrival of the railway in 1841. During the watching brief, a number of rough stone blocks were noted. These lay in a line which mirrored the eastern boundary of the site, and may have represented a small area of tumble, a revetment or part of the internal remains of a wall. No dating evidence was recovered from the feature, but the overlying topsoil contained fragments of 20th century pottery. No further archaeological features or artefacts were observed. [AIP] |
