Abstract: |
The archaeological watching brief revealed natural sands and gravels overlying a biologically reworked soil, probably representing agricultural activity. To the east of the site as recorded in Trial Pit 2 a building, represented by a basement had been constructed using bricks of a probable late 17th-early 19th century date, although they had probably been reused. The only possible evidence for occupation activity consisted of a layer of coal ash and cinders recorded in Trial Pit 2. Subsequently, the site appeared to have been covered with a layer of demolition material, possibly originating from the superstructure associated with the basement. Truncating this, along the northern and southern side of the site, the construction cuts for the adjacent buildings were identified. [Au(adp)] |
