Abstract:
The study was undertaken in advance of redevelopment of the Oxford Road Mill site. The site was of interest as it was the only site in Aylesbury, apart from the parish church, where there was continuous documentary evidence for activity since the Norman Conquest. The earliest record of the site was in the Domesday Survey of 1086 which recorded two mills being at Aylesbury, one of which was likely to be the Oxford Road Mill. The mill was known as Spital Mill from the 14th century, and probably earlier, until the 19th century. Amongst the earliest documents were various grants, leases, quit claims and other legal records relating to the tenure, which enabled several of the owners and leasees to be identified. Shortly before the mill's destruction by fire, the mill buildings present were the subject of a preliminary survey its history up until this point was covered by the report. In view of the historic significance of the site, the report recommended further archaeological investigation, including archaeological excavation, in the general area of the former mill. [AIP]
