Abstract: |
A desk-top study was undertaken of a small block of land at the northern end of Knapton village, on the western edge of York in advance of the proposed construction of four detached dwellings. Archaeological remains relating to the prehistoric, Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval periods were found to be present close to the site. It appeared certain that a building stood in the south-west corner of the site until at least the mid 19th century, but whether or not any other archaeological remains were present within the site remained uncertain. The relatively high potential for archaeological remains suggested by the nearby crop marks led to the recommendation that small-scale archaeological evaluation be carried out. [Au(adp)] |
