Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken on land at Othona, which comprised the Roman and Saxon shore fort, the Anglo-Saxon monastery and their environs. Some prehistoric activity had been identified 160m to the north of the area, during the excavation of the Othona Community Site with a possible date range from the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. There was also a single Bronze Age gold 'ring-money' from the site of the later fort. The earliest Roman features, both within the Scheduled Area and on the Othona Community Site dated to the third to Fourth centuries AD, although the majority of the activity dated to the fourth to fifth centuries. The fort itself was customarily identified as 'Othona', as listed in the Notitia Dignitatum, and was thought to have been founded c.250-270Ad. The eastern half of the fort had been undermined by the sea and washed away.
