Abstract: |
There was nothing to suggest that prehistoric, Roman or Saxon archaeology would be present within the site. During the medieval period the site probably lay adjacent to or within burgage plots. In the early post-medieval period map evidence indicated that the site lay on undeveloped ground but adjacent to buildings and the area was used for drying cloth. The area was developed in the 18th century and was used for a school and timber yards. Subsequent developments included terraced housing, an iron foundry, a pottery and warehouses. All buildings were demolished in 1970 and the site had lain empty since. [AIP] |
