Abstract:
Archaeological excavation and recording were undertaken to meet a condition for preservation by record, that had been attached to the planning consent for a housing estate. Eleven areas were stripped of topsoil by machine and hand excavated. Three principal areas of archaeological activity were encountered. These were: the southern edge of an Early/Middle Iron Age enclosure; a complex of Late Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure ditches and associated pits; and a small Romano-British cremation cemetery and further enclosures. The earliest activity on the site, apart from a single residual flint tool of Upper Palaeolithic date, was represented by an assemblage of residual flintwork of Mesolithic date. Neolithic and Bronze Age activity was also represented by residual flint assemblages, with the exception of a single possible Bronze Age pit. [Au(abr)]
