Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out on the northern part of the Spitalfields Market redevelopment. Seven trenches were dug, two in the fields known as Lollesworth during the early medieval period and later as Spitalfields, and five within the precinct of the Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital. Quarry pits, a well and refuse dumping of the late 16th and early 17th centuries were found, these were sealed by later structures and dumping. Within the priory precinct, a large medieval feature, probably a pond was excavated, as were a number of other medieval features including pits, ditches and stakeholes. A timber structure dating to the late medieval/early post-medieval period was found. [Au(adp)] |
