Abstract: |
Fluxgate magnetometry surveys were carried out within a 30m wide corridor along sections of the proposed West Hull Transco pipeline. Geophysical survey was concentrated within areas of archaeological interest as indicated by cropmarks and artefact scatters. An existing ethylene gas pipeline existed close to the easement in a number of the sections examined. However, the geophysical influence of this structure was found to be negligible. Numerous geophysical anomalies of archaeological interest were detected. These included sections of soil-filled ditched that may comprise old field boundaries and smaller-scale enclosures. Several negative magnetic anomalies suggested the presence of trackways or field banks, and traces of medieval cultivation ridges were also located. The survey provided good evidence for buried metal and plastic pipes of geotechnical interest and for which mitigation may be required during emplacement of the new pipeline. [Au(adp)] |
