Abstract: |
Of the thirteen test pits monitored on the proposed wellsite two contained features of archaeological interest. One of these was a relatively recently infilled chalk pit which was recorded on the 1st edition OS map of 1854 and was also detected by the earlier geophysical survey. The other may have been a posthole, although its formation as a result of geological activity could not be discounted. Features were not present in the test pits situated on deeper subsoil in the area of the palaeochannels or at the base of the slope at the northern side of the site. The depth at which any existing archaeological deposits might occur in these areas was not known. The presence of a worked flint flake from the topsoil of one of the test pits at the eastern side of the site was to be expected as the area produced most of the fieldwalked material. However, no archaeological deposits were recorded in the test pit. [Au(adp)] |
