Abstract: |
Trial excavations were excavated within an area of land which lay in the medieval core of Beverley. The earliest phase of occupation (late 12th to mid 13th century) comprised the presence of a rubbish pit and the accumulation of a trampled surface. The late 13th century saw the raising of the ground and the construction of a building, the floors and foundations of which were recorded. The 14th century saw the revertion of the land to open ground and the excavation of gravel extraction pits. Another building was constructed in the late 14th - early 15th century. The whole site was later completely raised by the dumping of clay in the 15th/16th century and subsequent 18th century activity was restricted to the digging of rubbish pits and the construction of either boundary markers or buildings. An interesting and varied finds assemblage resulted from the excavations, including the first clear evidence for the working of copper alloy in Beverley; crucible fragments were recovered from the fills of 14th- or early 15th-century pits.
