Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a development of four dwellings adjacent to Upper Paradise Farm, Marden. The site lies on the southern side of the village of Marden and consists of an extensive system of earthworks over much of its extent, comprising possible hollow ways, former property divisions and house platforms. The earliest features identified were plough furrows, representing an episode of cross-ploughing within a system of fields laid out differently to the modern pattern, perhaps dating to the pre-enclosure period. Elsewhere in the field a possibly medieval boundary ditch with an entrance was identified; this had been excavated and subsequently re-excavated, the entrance being increased in width. The boundary seems to have shifted a little to the west when a pit was dug in the entrance; a lump of slag recovered from the pit suggests that smithing activities were being carried out nearby. A large post hole is thought to relate to hop growing in the early 20th century. An earthwork platform produced no clear evidence of a structure and may have been produced entirely fortuitously by the combination of a small hollow way to the north and the digging of gravel to the east.[AIP]
