Abstract:
The report indicated that the site area had limited potential for the discovery of significant archaeological remains from the prehistoric period, but previous archaeological investigations in the immediate vicinity had produced substantial remains from the Roman, medieval and early post-medieval periods including the discovery of a Claudian/Neronian dated rubbish pit found to the east of the site. The archaeological potential of the site had been considerably reduced by the construction of the present building, particularly a double basement which covered much of the area and would have removed all but the lowest levels of archaeological deposits. There were two small areas, which were beyond the current footprint of the building, where the level of survival may have been higher. It was concluded that intrusive groundworks below the current basement levels may have encountered limited archaeological deposits and it was recommended that if engineering test-pits were excavated that these should be archaeologically monitored along with a number of archaeological test-pits in order to allow a more informed decision on the level of further archaeological work required.
