Abstract: |
Small trial trenches and test pits were excavated in advance of excavation works for a relief sewer from Canary Wharf to Abbey Mills sewer at Mill Meads. Most of the shafts were positioned on an area of high ground on the natural gravel terrace on the north bank of the River Thames, two shafts were located near the Isle of Dogs. A sequence of road surfaces which probably dated from the medieval period was found in Shaft 15 (TQ 3835 8075), and evidence for prehistoric activity was found in the lower silts from Shaft 12 (TQ 3833 8125) in the form of a fire cracked flint and a pot sherd.
